Clarity with purpose

What to expect from a psychological assessment

A psychological assessment brings together your experiences, background and assessment results to develop a clearer understanding of your needs. The process is individualised according to the purpose of the assessment and the questions you are hoping to answer.

01

Initial enquiry

We clarify the reason for the assessment, the questions being asked and whether COPE can provide the type of assessment or report required.

02

Clinical interview

Your psychologist gathers relevant information about your current concerns, development, health, relationships, education, work and broader circumstances.

03

Assessment and testing

Depending on the referral question, this may involve interviews, validated questionnaires, psychometric measures and information from other relevant sources.

04

Feedback and recommendations

Findings are brought together and explained clearly, with practical recommendations and a written report where this forms part of the agreed assessment.

More than a test score

Assessment results are interpreted within the context of the whole person. A score alone cannot fully explain someone’s experiences, functioning, strengths or difficulties.

Our psychologists consider the interaction between emotional, cognitive, behavioural, developmental and relational factors to provide a balanced and meaningful understanding.

An individualised process

  • The assessment is guided by a specific referral question
  • Only relevant measures are selected
  • Your personal and cultural context is considered
  • Strengths are considered alongside areas of difficulty
  • Findings are explained in accessible language
  • Recommendations are tailored to the purpose of the assessment

Please note: not every assessment results in a diagnosis, and not every psychologist provides every type of assessment. The required appointments, documentation, timeframe and fees will depend on the assessment’s purpose and complexity. COPE will clarify suitability and provide information about the proposed scope before the assessment begins.
