Provisional Psychologist

B.Psy.Sc | MProfPsych

Nikki is a provisionally registered psychologist who joined COPE in October 2020 after having completed her Bachelor of Psychological Sciences in Queensland. Over the past five years, Nikki has worked with our NDIS participants across a variety of roles here at COPE, including as a Psychosocial Support Worker, Psychosocial Recovery Coach / Support Coordinator, and even as our Group Events Coordinator. Since completing her Master of Professional Psychology in 2024, Nikki has been completing her internship in private practice, working with children (5+ years), adolescents and adults in clinic and off-site.

Nikki has a deep commitment to helping others learn more about their authentic selves and believes that building others’ capacity for self-awareness and reflection is the first step to healing. As such, Nikki’s primary focus is on nurturing a collaborative therapeutic alliance with clients and creating a safe space together, where clients feel empowered to explore their inner world and be their authentic selves.
Nikki accepts both NDIS and private referrals, however, please note that as a Provisional Psychologist, Nikki is unable to process Medicare rebates under the Mental Health Care Plan. Contact us to enquire about fees.

What is a Provisional Psychologist?

A Provisional Psychologist is a psychology graduate who has been approved by the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA) to practise under supervision while completing a formal internship program (e.g., the 5+1 pathway or the post-Master’s internship) to achieve general registration. Provisional psychologists deliver evidence-based therapy, follow strict professional standards, and receive regular supervision to ensure safe, high-quality care.

Provisional vs Registered Psychologist — what’s the difference?

Registration status

  • Provisional: Practises under an approved supervision plan while completing remaining training requirements.
  • Registered (General registration): Has completed all training and supervision requirements and may practise independently.

Supervision

  • Provisional: Ongoing, structured supervision is mandatory.
  • Registered: Supervision is not mandated for general practice (though consultation/peer supervision is best practice).

Medicare rebates

  • Provisional: Not eligible to provide Medicare rebates under Better Access.
  • Registered: Eligible to provide Medicare-rebated services (with a Medicare provider number and appropriate referral).

Standards & ethics

  • Both: Must meet AHPRA/Psychology Board of Australia standards, keep client information confidential, maintain professional competence, and use evidence-based approaches.

If you’re unsure whether Nikki’s registration type suits your needs (including Medicare eligibility), please reach out—our team can guide you to the right clinician and fee options.
